Top 5 Ways to boost your brain power!

TOP 5 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR BRAIN POWER!

Can’t remember your where you put your keys?  Or what that friend of a friend’s name is? …..

Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use your brain, or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to think and learn will deteriorate.

Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter.

1.EXERCISE- MIND

A study funded by the National Institute of Health found that cognitive training or exercising your mind can counteract seven to fourteen years of age related cognitive decline. So pull out some suduko today!  There are many brain boosting games and programs out there one I found is Lumosity which is designed by some of the leading experts in neuroscience and cognitive psychology from Stanford and UCSF

2. EXERCISE-BODY

New research from the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia suggests dementia and Alzheimer’s disease may be added to the list of diseases associated with a high body mass index. The goal BMI to be between 20-25 for optimal health and over 25 to be considered overweight and over 30 is obese.

3. A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

A study published in the December 2006 issue of Archives of Neurology found that a Mediterranean diet could lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by up to 68%. The Mediterranean diet is rich in legumes, whole grains, fish, nuts, fruits, vegetables and olives. It has very little meat and dairy products and thus is low in saturated fat and high in monosaturated fat and dietary fibre.  The Vitality & Balance™ Menu can be designed custom to you!

4. KEEP YOUR BODY FUELED-EAT AND DRINK EVERY 3 HOURS

Research shows that stamina and endurance is optimized when one fuels the body often versus waiting until the tank is empty. A colleague of mine who is a grandfather and ultra marathon runner did an experiment where he ran one race with just food and drink where it was offered to him and the next race with eating or drinking every hour whether he was thirsty and or hungry or not. The results were that in the first race he grew tired after mile 36 and the second he could still continue running after the end of 3 marathons back to back. How many of us are running marathons daily with our normal life? The results show that if we demand optimal performance (optimal exercise results and focus and concentration results) from our bodies we must fuel them before they run out of energy.

5. CATCH SOME Z-Z-Z’s.

Research shows that a catnap of 20 minutes daily can increase longevity by up to 27%.

BONUS TIPS!

Fruit and Vegetable Juices

not enough time for a snack, grab a veggie juice. Research published in the September 2006 issue of the American Journal of Medicine found that a daily glass of juice is enough to make a difference. Participants who drank fruit or vegetable juice a few times per week were 76% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to individuals who drank less than one glass a week. The polyphenols found in the skin and peel of fruits and vegetables is believed to be the active component. When making a choice ensure your beverage is sugar free.

WRITE THINGS DOWN- If I sent you to the grocery store to pick up bread, lettuce ,carrots , garlic soup and oh yes eggs , what would you be thinking of on your drive there if you didn’t write it down?

Gotta run now and do my brain exercises!

Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance is a condition when estrogen relative to progesterone is at a higher ratio.

In woman with estrogen dominance a woman may have deficient, normal or excessive estrogen, but has little or no progesterone to balance its effects in the body.  The term was first coined by Dr. Lee a pioneer in woman’s hormone research.  With breast cancer rates at one in nine and continuing to affect woman at an earlier age and the association of estrogen dominance to higher risk it is important that every woman be tested for the Estrogen to Progesterone Ratio in Hormone Testing.(1)

What causes estrogen dominance?

Long Term Stress-

When the body is under stress  the adrenal glands produce the fight and flight hormones : epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, progesterone and  DHEA which breaks down into testosterone and estrogen . This allows you to have increased energy to manage the acute situation. Then you may take a holiday or get more sleep and the body returns to balance.

When you are under chronic stress for long periods of time these hormones remain high longer.    This leads to higher levels of estrogen relative to progesterone and many symptoms associated.

Environmental Exposure to Estrogens or Estrogen Like Chemicals-

We are exposed to estrogens on a daily basis.  Many chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, plastics (BPH) and hormones are used in our every day lives in which we absorb into our bodies. Many generalized symptoms maybe related with out us ever knowing. Over time the exposure will cause more chronic problems such as arthritis or premenopause symptoms, and may be a direct or indirect cause of cancer.

What are estrogen dominance symptoms?

The symptoms and conditions associated with estrogen dominance  and hormonal imbalance are:

  • Acceleration of the aging process
  • Allergies, including asthma, hives, rashes, sinus congestion
  • Anxiety, Depression
  • Autoimmune disorders such as lupus erythematosis and thyroiditis, and possibly Sjoegren’s disease
  • Breast cancer
  • Breast tenderness
  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Cold hands and feet as a symptom of thyroid dysfunction
  • Copper excess
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Depression with anxiety or agitation
  • Dry eyes
  • Early onset of menstruation
  • Endometrial (uterine) cancer
  • Fat gain, especially around the abdomen, hips and thighs
  • Fatigue
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Foggy thinking
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Hair Loss
  • Headaches
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Increased blood clotting (increasing risk of strokes)
  • Infertility
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Magnesium deficiency
  • Memory loss
  • Mood swings
  • Osteoporosis
  • Polycystic ovaries
  • Premenopausal bone loss
  • PMS
  • Prostate cancer (men only)
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • Thyroid dysfunction mimicking hypothyroidism
  • Uterine cancer
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Water retention, bloating
  • Weight , difficulty loosing weight even with significant exercise
  • Zinc deficiency

What can we do?

With all the above generalized symptoms and the rising rates of cancer, early assessment is very important. Progressive  Hormone Testing is an integral part of learning if you are estrogen dominant and having a hormonal balancing program put into place.

Why strength train through the decades?

Want to look & feel your best ?  Through the decades weight training is one of the foundations in fitness for different reasons.

Research shows that  strength training promotes good health and defends against the aging process.  Optimal weight & health comes from nutrition, living life with balance and  a well-designed exercise program that includes weight training. By the age of 20 most people stop growing upwards and start growing outwards, adding fat and loosing muscle.   You can change this at anytime!  What are the factors that you need to know for each decade?

In your 20’s : Each year with the change in hormones your overall lean muscle mass declines reducing your daily caloric needs .  Men’s caloric needs or BMR decline by 6.8 calories per day per year while women’s declines by 4.7 calories per day per year.  By age 70, your  body fat may reach almost half of your total weight without eating or drinking any more than you did at age 20. (1) A 20-year-old woman who does not lift weights will lose about 6 pounds of muscle and gain 5 pounds of fat by age 50 Thus your overall weight may remain the same yet subtle changes begin to occur in your body composition that are not reflected on the bathroom scale. If your focus is just your weight you may not realize the changes that are occurring in your body composition balance.  Assessing all body changes including: weight, body fat, body  ( BF) composition and measurements gives a true reflection of your health.

In your 30’s : Bone health, balanced hormones & good endorphins which reduce stress are motivators to strengthening the muscles in this decade. By age 30 you’ve achieved your peak bone mass, the most bone density you’ll have in your lifetime. Want to stay tall?  Keep exercising, exercise has a dramatic effect on the growing skeleton, which is why it is essential for children and adolescents to be physically active. Once the skeleton stops growing, the effect of exercise on the bone is more modest. If you do not develop adequate bone-mineral density at an early age, your risk of osteoporosis increases later in life.

In your 40’s : Finding you are gaining weight? Wondering about hormones?  At about age 40, most women start to lose bone and muscle mass causing a decrease in metabolism of about 3% every decade. Strength training keeps you lean by building muscles. Lean body mass has a higher resting metabolic rate than fat, burning more calories as you breathe, digest food, even as you sleep.

In your 50’s : The average weight gain during premenopause is 10 pounds. Hormonal changes cause some loss of muscle with accompanying weight gain, but you can keep this to a minimum with weight training. Exercise may be the most important factor in keeping weight off once you’ve lost it. In one recent study, women who lost weight and exercised (either on a walking program or on a weight-training regimen) regained less weight than those who didn’t, and, even more striking, did not regain weight around their mid-section.

In your 60’s : In this decade  your 60’s the loss of muscle fibers causes you to slow down, lose strength and vigor. Specifically, the fast-twitch muscle fibers, which provide for rapid, high-intensity movement, shrink in size, causing not only a loss of muscle mass, but also a loss of power. Restoring muscle restores your strength and energy levels.

In your  70’s : In the North America 2/3 of women over the age of 75 can’t lift 10 pounds. Studies show that you are never too old to begin a weight-training program and that lifting weights can improve your quality of life even into your 80’s and 90’s. Weight training creates stability, which can help balance and walking ability which ultimately increases independance.

To get the most out of your fitness , consider having your hormone’s tested.

Research shows that much of what we consider the aging process – the loss of strength, stamina, bone density, balance and flexibility – is actually due to inactivity. Take action now to be golden into your golden years and keep fit!
